Spring in Italy: right now, we’re longing for it more than ever

There is always something magical about spring in Italy. It is the season when the landscape slowly transitions from its winter slumber to new life, when the first outdoor cafés reopen, and when the hills regain their soft, green glow. But this year, that longing for spring feels stronger than usual. Over the past few days, Italy has seen a rare amount of snow, even in areas where a white landscape is almost unheard of in March.

Snow

From the Alps to the Apennines, and even in the lower hills, the landscape was suddenly blanketed in winter white. A sight to behold, but also unexpected. The sort of snow that takes you back to the past, when the seasons seemed more clearly defined. And perhaps it is precisely this surprise that makes us look forward to what lies ahead with even greater anticipation.

Spring

Because spring in Italy isn’t a date on the calendar, but a feeling that creeps in slowly. It begins with the scent of damp earth after the first warm rain shower. With the almond trees, the first to dare to show their blossoms. With the markets filling up once more with artichokes, agretti and the first strawberries. With footpaths becoming accessible again and villages seeing their squares come back to life.

In regions such as Abruzzo and Le Marche, where nature and tranquillity still reign supreme, the contrast between winter and spring is particularly striking. The hills, which are still white now, will transform within a few weeks into a patchwork of green, yellow and soft pink. The coast is bathed once more in spring light, that bright, almost silvery glow that you only see at this time of year. And the small establishments that make Italy so special are preparing for a new season full of guests, stories and encounters.

The best time

Perhaps that is the beauty of this moment. The unexpected snow reminds us just how dynamic and vibrant this country is. How each season has its own character. And how spring, coming just after such a final burst of winter, feels like a promise that is about to burst forth.

For anyone planning a trip to Italy soon, this is the best time to experience the country. Not only because the temperatures are rising and nature is coming to life, but because you get to be part of that moment of transition. That brief, special window when Italy stretches out, warms up and breathes anew.

Spring is on its way. And this year, it feels as though the whole of Italy is looking forward to it.
